Cable VCBL-D- FRGHT: AI Dashcam Plus installation guide for Freightliner 2017 and later trucks

What comes in the box?

  • Cable VCBL-D-FRGHT
  • Cable ties
     

Tools 

  • Electric Drill
  • Torx T25 8mm drive bit socket
  • 5 labeled cups to keep track of screws/nuts
  • Flashlight (optional)

Installing Cable VCBL-D- FRGHT

Note: Before starting the installation, ensure the following:

  • The parking brake is engaged.
  • The engine is off.
  • The main power switch (if available) is turned off.

Identify the cable ends

1. The VCBL-Y-FRGHT cable includes five labelled ends:

  • P1: Connects to the vehicle adapter
  • P2: Connects to the vehicle’s power and ground splice packs
  • P3: Connects to the vehicle’s CAN J1939 250K TEM splice pack

Remove the panels and connect the cables

  • Removing the dashboard panel

    • Remove nine T25 screws from the outer dash bezel and place them in the cup labeled ‘Dash Bezel’. Remove the outer dash bezel and place it outside the cabin

  • Removing the instrumentation panel

    • Remove eight T25 screws from the instrumentation panel. Remove the red ‘Trailer Air Supply’ and yellow ‘Parking Brake’ knobs (if present). Place the screws and knobs in a cup labeled ‘Instrumentation Panel’.

  • Removing the passenger dash panel

    • Remove two T25 screws from the passenger dash panel and place them in a cup labeled ‘Passenger Dash Panel’. Remove the passenger dash panel and place it outside the vehicle. Be careful not to damage the panel detents.

  • Removing the top panel

    • Remove nine T25 screws from the top panel and place them in a cup labeled ‘Top Panel’. Gently raise the top panel a few inches from its original position. 
    • Insert the terminated leads of the Motive cable through the top panel.

  • Identifying the connector

    • Identify a J1939 250K TEM splice pack near the center dashboard (typically splice pack 2/SP2). Remove the grey wire grommet in the back of the splice pack. Connect the CAN interface of the cable (P3)  to the truck’s J1939 250K CAN interface. Insert the CAN_H wire and CAN_L wire into the yellow and green sections of the TEM splice pack, respectively. Insert the grey wire holder into the back of the splice pack.

  • Connecting to Power

    • Connect the black ground wire to the ‘GND’ TEM splice pack. Connect the red wire to the ‘Power Battery’ TEM splice pack from the P2 end of the cable.
    • Secure the wiring and TEM splice packs with cable ties, then reattach the panels.

Note: Depending on the vehicle, the panels may need to be modified to run the cable 

to the top of the dashboard. If the panels cannot be modified, then mount the vehicle adapter

inside the panel. When mounted inside the panel, ensure the cable is not pinched, as this 

will damage the cable

Connect the AI Dashcam Plus

  1. Plug the AI Dashcam Plus cable into the vehicle adapter.

  1. Plug the vehicle adapter into one end of the Y cable (P1).

Test and mount the AI Dashcam Plus

  1. Refer to the AI Dashcam Plus Installation Guide for instructions on testing and mounting the device to the vehicle's windshield or the left side of the rearview mirror. Once mounted, the final installation should resemble the example shown in the original guide.

  1. Start the vehicle’s engine. Once the alert/right LED turns blue, the AI Dashcam Plus is powered on and connected.
