Cycle Rule Defaults and Driver Overrides

Introduction

Motive now supports company-level default Cycle Rules with driver-level overrides for both Primary and Secondary Cycle Rules. This update makes it easier for fleets to manage Cycle Rule settings at scale while still allowing individual drivers to use a different rule when needed.

What’s New?

  • Company-level default Cycle Rule: Your company’s configured Primary and Secondary Cycle Rules now serve as the default for drivers who have not explicitly set their own Cycle Rule.
  • Driver-level overrides: If a driver later changes their Cycle Rule, that setting will be treated as an override on top of the company default.
  • Clearer visibility into exceptions: Driver overrides are displayed separately from the inherited company default, helping admins identify which drivers are following the company setting and which have their own configuration.
  • Future updates to company defaults: If your company changes its default Cycle Rule later, drivers who are inheriting that setting may also see their Cycle Rule update automatically. Drivers with an explicit override will continue using their own setting.

Important for admins

Cycle Rule is a compliance-sensitive setting. Before updating your company default, review which drivers may be inheriting that setting.

If you update the company default Cycle Rule:

  • Drivers without an explicit override may be updated to the new default.
  • Drivers with their own explicit override should remain unchanged.
Note: If you’re unsure whether your drivers are using the company default or their own override, contact Motive Support. Our team can help you understand how this setting is being applied in your fleet.

How does this help our customers?

  • Easier large-scale management: Fleets can apply a consistent default Cycle Rule across many drivers without configuring each driver individually.
  • Better consistency: Company-level defaults help standardize compliance settings across the organization.
  • More flexibility where needed: Drivers who require a different Cycle Rule can still keep an explicit override without being affected by later company-level changes.
  • Better admin awareness: Fleets can more easily review which drivers are inheriting the company default and which are using an override.
