AFD (Automated Fuel Dispenser) pump limits are usually capped at $500 at all merchants by providers such as Mastercard. However, with Motive Cards, certain merchants allow users to make transactions between $500 and $1000.
Overview
With Motive Cards, eligible AFD transactions at certain truck stops and fuel brands can exceed the standard $500 ceiling and go up to $1,000. Key advantages of higher AFD limits with Motive Cards include:
- Fewer interruptions at the pump: Reduce the need for multiple smaller transactions or going inside to complete a large fuel purchase.
- Smoother fueling for high-volume vehicles: Better support for large tanks and long-haul routes that routinely require higher dollar amounts per fill.
- Stronger protection with flexibility: Maintain Mastercard’s fraud safeguards while still enabling larger, controlled AFD transactions at vetted merchants within the Motive network.
This higher limit is available only at participating merchants.

FAQs
What do I need to do to bypass the AFD $500 limit?
Nothing. Where accepted (list above), Motive will automatically authorize your card at the pump for a higher limit.
Do I get to decide what limit I am authorized for?
We apply various rules to determine your limits at the time of transaction, including your daily/weekly spend limits, whether you are at a truck stop, and whether you have our fraud protection features enabled. If you have card unlock or vehicle location mismatch-based auto-decline enabled, you can be authorized for a transaction of a maximum of $1000, depending on various other factors listed above.
