Safety admin permissions allow fleets to control who can access and manage critical Safety settings in the Motive Dashboard. By assigning granular permissions to specific roles, fleet admins can ensure that only authorized users can modify configurations related to event detection, Safety Score settings, coaching workflows, dashcam settings, and collision settings.
Proper management of Safety permissions helps maintain consistent Safety configurations across your organization while limiting editing access to the users responsible for those settings.
Overview
The Safety permissions framework introduces a hierarchical model within Roles & Permissions. Parent permission, Manage Safety Settings, governs a set of granular sub-permissions tied to specific Safety features.
Full Safety management access can be granted by selecting the parent permission, or access can be tailored by selecting only the specific Safety permissions required for a role. This structure aligns permissions with job responsibilities while maintaining control over organization-level and vehicle-level Safety settings.
How Safety Admin Permissions Work
Safety permissions follow a hierarchical structure:
- Selecting Manage Safety Settings automatically selects all related sub-permissions.
- Individual sub-permissions can be deselected to customize access.
- If Manage Safety Settings is deselected, all sub-permissions are automatically removed.
- Sub-permissions appear grouped beneath the parent permission in the Admin panel.
Each Safety permission supports both View and Manage access levels:
- View allows users to see settings.
- Manage allows users to edit settings.
If a user has View access but not Manage access, settings remain visible but cannot be edited.
Safety permissions extend to organization-level and vehicle-level settings where applicable.

FAQs
Can Safety permissions be managed through the API?
Yes. Safety admin permissions are available through the Motive API and can be configured through API-based role management.
Why am I unable to edit a Safety setting?
If a role includes View access but not Manage access, users can see settings but cannot edit them. When attempting to edit without permission, the following message appears: Permission required to Edit. Please contact your Administrator.
Does selecting Manage Safety Settings grant access to all Safety permissions?
Yes. Selecting the parent permission automatically selects all related sub-permissions. Individual permissions can then be deselected to customize access. If the parent permission is removed, all sub-permissions are removed.
