AI Dashcam usage with Camera Control API

The AI Dashcam camera control API is a new API  that allows customers to turn off all camera recording, including the road-facing camera, driver-facing camera, alerts, and LEDs.  This feature powers down the camera completely and is typically used when the camera cannot or should not record in a secure or private area, or if the vehicle is also used in personal mode. Using this secure API, fleet managers can manage the camera state for individual devices

Overview

  • Ensures Driver & Road-facing Privacy: Allows admins to disable both cameras recording during personal use of the vehicle, protecting their privacy.
  • Meets Compliance Requirements: Helps fleets comply with privacy regulations and contractual agreements, particularly in industries such as ride-sharing for children or public sector work, where employee privacy is a critical concern.
  • Flexible Fleet Management: Provides fleet managers with a secure and simple way to manage camera states across their fleet, aligning with operational needs.
  • Prevents Unnecessary Footage: Minimizes irrelevant footage captured and stored, improving data management and efficiency.

Dashcam Camera Control API

  • The API lets Motive fleet customers securely control the recording state of both driver-facing and road-facing cameras through authenticated API calls.
  • To activate privacy mode, a customer sends a request specifying the desired camera state (“on” or “off”) for any given device. The backend processes the request, attempts to update the device, and logs the outcome, including details such as device ID, timestamp, and user.
  • If the device is offline (no LTE or powered off), the system responds with a clear error and queues the request until connectivity is restored.
  • All API activity is logged for audit and diagnostics
  • The camera status, including when a device is in privacy mode, is visible on the Cameras tab within your Motive dashboard. A new status, "Recording Off by Customer," has been introduced to indicate when the privacy mode is active clearly.
  • The camera state persists across engine cycles and power interruptions.

Automating Driver Privacy

  • Use Motive’s Public API documentation here.
  • Customers send an API request to toggle camera recording for a chosen device.
  • The system confirms the action (or returns a clear error if the device is unreachable).

LED Indicators: When the camera is off, no LEDs are active.
