Positive Driving Events and Recognition

Positive Driving Events help fleets recognize and reinforce safe driving behaviors. These events highlight actions such as alert driving and safe distancing, allowing fleets to promote a safety culture that goes beyond correcting unsafe behavior.

Positive events integrate with coaching workflows across the Fleet Dashboard, Driver App, and Fleet App, enabling both managers and drivers to acknowledge and celebrate good driving habits.

Overview

Positive Driving Events are designed to help fleets strengthen driver engagement and safety culture by:

  • Recognizing safe driving behaviors: Highlights actions such as alert driving and safe distancing based on event context
  • Supporting positive reinforcement: Enables fleets to acknowledge good driving habits alongside coaching unsafe behaviors
  • Integrating with coaching workflows: Surfaces positive events in coaching sessions, Driver App tasks, and event reviews
  • Providing flexible configuration: Allows fleets to control event generation, automation, and visibility through settings

Positive driving events are displayed with a green “Positive driving” banner and do not impact the Safety Score.

How Positive Driving Events are generated

Positive Driving Events are created when qualifying driving behavior is identified and tagged as positive.

  • Supported positive behaviors include:
    • Alert driving
    • Safe distancing
  • Positive tags can be applied in two ways:
    • Automatically: The system identifies scenarios where driver actions demonstrate safe behavior (such as reacting quickly to avoid a collision)
    • Manually: Users can assign a positive behavior tag from the event details page
Note: Positive driving events do not affect the Safety Score.

Configure Positive Behavior Detection

Positive behavior detection settings control whether positive driving events can be generated and tagged.

To configure:

  1. Log in to the Motive Fleet Dashboard and go to Admin > Safety > Behavior Detection and Event Intelligence.
  2. Scroll down to Positive Behavior Detection > Edit
  3. Enable or disable:
    • Alert Driving
    • Safe Distancing
  4. Click Save

How this setting works

  • By default, Alert Driving and Safe Distancing are enabled as positive behaviors
  • When enabled:
    • The system can automatically tag qualifying events (such as hard braking or near-collision scenarios) as positive behaviors
    • Positive behavior tags are also available for users to manually assign from the event details page
  • When a positive behavior is disabled:
    • That behavior will no longer be automatically tagged by the system
    • The corresponding tag will no longer be available for manual selection
  • If all positive behavior detection settings are disabled:
    • Positive behavior tags cannot be applied
    • Positive driving events will not be generated
    • Recognition statuses (Deserves recognition / Recognized) will not be available

Positive Driving Coaching Statuses

Positive Driving Events introduce two coaching statuses:

Deserves recognition

  • Indicates that a driver demonstrated positive driving behavior
  • Appears as a selectable status on the event
  • Can be applied automatically or manually

Recognized

  • Indicates that the positive behavior has been acknowledged
  • Can be assigned:
    • From the event details page
    • From coaching sessions using the Mark as recognized action

These statuses appear in the same status dropdown as other event statuses (such as Coachable and Coached).

Note: A positive behavior tag is required in order to apply these statuses

Coaching and Automation

Fleets can automate how positive driving events are handled through Coaching settings.

To configure automation:

  1. Go to Admin > Safety > Coaching > Coaching Status > Edit.
  2. Go to Coaching Status >Edit.
  3. Enable:
    • Mark positive driving as “deserves recognition”
  4. Click Save

When enabled:

  • Events with positive behavior tags are automatically marked as Deserves recognition
  • These events can be shared with drivers in the Driver App (if enabled)
  • Drivers can self-coach to convert Deserves recognition events into Recognized
Note: Positive driving events do not impact the Safety Score.

Driver App Experience

Positive Driving Events are integrated into the Driver App so drivers can review and acknowledge their safe driving behavior.

  • Drivers receive a push notification and in-app alert (for example, “You have a new positive driving event to review”)
  • Positive driving tasks appear above unsafe behavior tasks in the AI Coach recap, under a dedicated positive driving section
  • Tasks may include behaviors such as Alert driving and Safe distancing

When a driver opens a positive driving task:

  • The event review screen displays a green “Positive driving” banner that highlights the recognized behavior
  • A single task may include one or more related video clips associated with the behavior
  • Drivers must watch the event video before marking the task as reviewed

After the driver completes the task, it moves into the Completed section of their task list, preserving a history of recognized positive events.

Coaching Sessions (Fleet Dashboard)

Positive Driving Events are included in coaching sessions to provide a balanced view of driver performance.

  • Positive events are grouped under a Positive driving behaviors section
  • These appear before unsafe behaviors in coaching sessions
  • Managers can acknowledge events using the Mark as recognized action

Fleet App Experience

Fleet managers can view and manage positive driving events in the Fleet App.

  • Positive events display a green “Positive driving” banner
  • Coaching statuses (Deserves recognition / Recognized) can be assigned directly
  • If an event does not have a positive behavior tag, users are prompted to add one before assigning recognition

Permissions

Fleets can control access using existing permissions:

  • Dismiss safety events and add positive behavior tags: Allows users to apply positive behavior tags
  • Coach safety events: Allows users to update coaching statuses
